This one was a surprise.

I only checked it out because I was looking for a new voice to talk me into sleep. Actually, I thought Misha Collins might have voiced some Supernatural tie-ins or children's books. I even checked the free sample first, because I was expecting a vanity project targeting his fanbase.

This is definitely not a vanity project. The quality of the poetry is great - and I've read and written a lot about modern English* poetry. I could do a deep dive here, but it would be really deep and probably more than you would like to read. (If you are into doing scholarly text analysis for fun: contact me. I like to play with others.)

The topics go from personal to descriptions of nature and are organized by theme. Also, I really recommend the audio book, because (obviously) this author is professionally trained to work …

The topics go from very personal to nature and are organized by theme. Influence wise (I'm only guessing here, but you might want to know if this book is of interest to you), I think I see some echoes of Roethke, Frost, Kizer. This is not poetry on their level, but it is solid, well-written and accomplished modern poetry which also stays accessible to casual readers.

Of course I have googled since and it turned out that Misha Collins has several poems published in the Columbia Poetry Review.

This refers to the language, not the nationality of the writer.

The most chilling and unpredictable thriller of the year

Gerade aus dem Newsletter des Autors gefischt: "The UK production company Vertigo Films have announced their intention to make a TV series adaptation of my 2016 Orbit Books novel The Last Days Of Jack Sparks."

Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass das ein interessantes Projekt wird (wobei noch sehr viel passieren muss, bevor tatsächlich gedreht und eventuell sogar veröffentlicht wird). Kritisch wird auch hier die Umsetzung der Struktur werden. Ich liebe VoiceOver-Erzähler - ja, auch bei Blade Runner - aber ich glaube, der Protagonist ist so schräg, dass es auf ein nerviges "witziger als mein Bruder" rauslaufen würde.

Jedenfalls ist das Buch bisher unterhaltsam und die Figuren deutlich interessanter als die in "Ghoster".

Schonmal deutlich cleverer als "Ghoster". Mehr hingeworfene Details sorgen für mehr Atmosphäre und wir haben eine (ok, eigentlich zwei) Hauptfigur(en), die nicht völlig verblödet sind.

Gestern oder vorgestern begonnen. Jack Sparks war sein Erstlingsroman, der sich nicht nur verkaufte, sondern auch wirklich viel gutes Feedback bekam. Ich bin gespannt, denn sein nächstes Buch "Ghoster" fand ich ja nicht so prächtig.

Ging so. Gut genug, um es zu Ende zu lesen, aber wäre es länger gewesen, hätte ich abgebrochen. Zum Teil nervte mich die Struktur (Gegenwartskapitel wechseln mit Ereignissen von vor Monaten ab), zum Teil, dass das Ganze letztlich doch recht statisch ist und sich nicht wirklich entscheiden will, welches Genre es nun sein will.

@jascha Oh, das ist nett. Die Serie ist eines der wenigen aktuellen Sachen, die ich tatsächlich mit Vergnügen gelesen und beendet habe.

Long time no read. At least no "proper" book. So far: somewhat slow - or just not fitting my nonexisting expectation. If I'd beta read this, I would have questioned the structure choice.
